Israel seeks alliances with European far-right parties
Israel is increasingly seeking alliances with far-right political parties across Europe as it faces growing international isolation due to the war in Gaza. While some of these parties have histories of antisemitism, the Israeli government has shown a willingness to engage with leaders who offer support for its policies.
In Austria, the Netanyahu government has moved to normalize relations with the Freedom Party, a shift from the year 2000 when Israel recalled its ambassador following the party's formation. Amichai Chikli, Israel's minister for combating antisemitism, described the recent engagement with Freedom Party leader Herbert Kickl as a 'historic turning point.'
In France, Chikli defended National Rally leader Jordan Bardella against allegations of past derogatory remarks about Jews, citing Bardella's stance against Hamas. Beyond Europe, Israel has also strengthened ties with hard-right administrations in Argentina and Colombia. However, Israeli officials continue to shun the far-right AfD in Germany.
