Israel sees surge in violent crimes against Arab youth

A sharp rise in violent crime is affecting Israel’s Arab minority. From the start of 2026 at least 140 Israeli citizens of Palestinian origin have been killed in violent incidents, a 12 % increase over the same period in 2025. If the current trend continues, the death toll could exceed 252, the highest recorded figure.

The community blames organised crime networks and the easy availability of weapons, while accusing police of inaction. Only 16 prosecutions were launched between 1 June and 26 June, representing just 12.3 % of the killings. Community leader Hanadar Kes of the Sunflowers organisation warned that “over 232 children lost a parent last year in the Arab community because of crime and violence.”

A personal story illustrates the impact: ten‑year‑old Sirin, whose father was stabbed to death four years ago near their home in northern Israel, says, “When I learned I lost him I was very sad, it was like I lost a part of me.” Sirin now lives in the coastal village of Jisr al‑Zarka. Recent incidents include five Arab Israelis killed by vehicle‑bomb explosions, the murder of 17‑year‑old Ahmad Jabbari in a supermarket in Jaffa, and three killings over three days that prompted local Muslim leaders to label the attacks “not random.”

Authorities say they are treating each case with “the utmost seriousness” and have set up working groups to coordinate a national response, but community members continue to demand stronger action to curb the violence that is leaving hundreds of orphaned children.
