Israel shifts diplomatic focus toward smaller nations amid Western friction

Israel is experiencing a shift in its diplomatic relations, moving away from traditional Western European allies toward smaller or more ideologically aligned nations. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar recently inaugurated new embassies in Jerusalem for Nauru and in Ljubljana, Slovenia, praising the latter for its support within the European Union.

In contrast, diplomatic ties with the United Kingdom have faced significant strain. Israel has lacked an ambassador in London for nearly a year, as intended envoy Tzachi Braverman was barred from leaving Israel due to a criminal investigation. Furthermore, the UK and 11 other countries have moved to impose sanctions and trade restrictions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, specifically citing the E1 settlement project.

This trend follows a broader pattern where several Western states, including Britain, Canada, and France, have moved toward recognizing Palestinian statehood, reflecting growing international friction regarding settlement expansion and violence in the West Bank.
