Israel and UAE aviation standoff disrupts regional flight services
A diplomatic and security standoff between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has disrupted regional aviation following an attempted terror attack involving a Flydubai flight. The incident, involving an Omani co-pilot who allegedly planned a suicide attack on Ben Gurion Airport, has led to a breakdown in negotiations regarding flight resumption.
Israel is demanding enhanced security measures, including the installation of Israeli-made X-ray machines at Dubai airports and authorization for Shin Bet agents to operate on-site. UAE officials have rejected these demands, stating they “insult our dignity” and refusing to cooperate with the investigation under the terms specified by Israel. Consequently, an Israeli delegation led by the Ministry of Transport has postponed its trip to Dubai, and Flydubai has yet to set a date for resuming service to Israel.
Simultaneously, Israeli airlines are facing operational challenges in Morocco. Following recent security directives, Israir has indefinitely suspended its plans to expand service to Marrakech and has halted ticket sales for those routes. This follows a period of uncertainty for carriers like Arkia and Sun d’Or, as Israeli security agencies implement stricter protocols for flights to nations without diplomatic relations with Israel.
