Israel-Somaliland ties spark tensions with Turkey and Somalia

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has heightened geopolitical tensions in the Horn of Africa, potentially setting the stage for a confrontation with Turkey. Analysts suggest Israel seeks to expand its influence in the Red Sea to better counter Ansar Allah (the Houthis) in Yemen. By establishing a presence in Somaliland, Israel could gain strategic intelligence capabilities and operational bases for drones and aircraft to strike targets in Yemen, which are located significantly closer to the Somaliland coast than from Israel.

This move has drawn strong opposition from Somalia and Turkey. Somali President Hassan Mohamud has stated that Mogadishu will oppose any Israeli military presence in territories it considers part of Somalia, specifically addressing reports of potential naval bases in Berbera. Turkey, which maintains extensive military and defense cooperation with the Somali government, views Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an interference in Somalia’s internal affairs. The region is increasingly militarized, with Somaliland officials expressing interest in Israeli support to counter Turkish-trained Somali forces and equipment.
