Israel state comptroller vacancy halts whistleblower protections

Israel’s state comptroller office has remained vacant since the term of Matanyahu Englman expired on July 5. This vacancy has halted the office’s ability to issue protective orders for public-sector whistleblowers and has limited the oversight of political finances.

The vacancy follows a disputed election process in the Knesset. On July 2, the High Court of Justice invalidated the election of attorney Michael Rabello, instructing the Knesset to conduct a new vote between the two original candidates after lawmakers compromised the secret ballot by revealing votes.

Concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest were raised by the Movement for Quality Government in Israel, noting that Rabello had previously represented Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud party in matters involving coalition agreements. While the court did not rule on the conflict-of-interest claim, Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana has not yet convened the required renewed vote.
