Israel strikes Hezbollah complex in Lebanon as US seeks mediation
Israel has conducted a major military operation in the Ali al-Tahir heights in southern Lebanon, utilizing approximately 1,100 tons of explosives to destroy a fortified Hezbollah underground complex. The operation reportedly destroyed eight main tunnels totaling over 5,400 meters in length. The facility served as a critical operational and logistical hub for Hezbollah’s Badr Unit, housing missile launch sites, drone storage, and communication networks.
Following the strike, intelligence assessments suggest Iran is exercising restraint regarding direct intervention. This hesitation is attributed to the exposure of Iran’s aerial defenses, specifically following strikes on S-300 batteries, which increases the risk to Iranian strategic assets like oil and nuclear sites. Analysts suggest this reflects a shift in Tehran’s strategy, prioritizing domestic stability and strategic depth over the ‘unity of fronts’ doctrine.
Simultaneously, the United States is attempting to mediate between Lebanon and Israel to prevent the collapse of a previous framework agreement. US officials, including General Joseph Clerfield, are expected to travel to Beirut and Tel Aviv to discuss security arrangements and resume negotiations. However, progress is hindered by reports of Iranian Revolutionary Guard fighters in southern Lebanon and Lebanese concerns regarding the destruction of civilian infrastructure.
