Israel conducts drone strike in southern Syria amid rising tensions

Israel conducted a drone strike in southern Syria, targeting an individual it described as a terrorist who posed an immediate threat to its soldiers. The Israeli military confirmed the operation but did not specify the exact method used.

In contrast, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the drone hit a civilian vehicle on a road near the village of Beit Jinn, west of Damascus. Syrian officials characterized the strike as an obvious violation of national sovereignty and international law. Syrian state television reported that at least one person was injured in the incident.

This strike follows increased tensions in the region, including a Tuesday bombardment of an airbase in northwest Syria. U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack described that previous strike as “unnecessary.” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz responded to Barrack’s criticism, calling the remarks inaccurate and contrary to the stance of President Donald Trump.

Israeli forces continue to operate in southern Syria and maintain a presence in territory occupied following the removal of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
