Israel strikes Abu al-Duhur airbase in Syria to counter Turkish military presence

Israel conducted a series of strikes against the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northwestern Syria, targeting the facility to prevent what it describes as Turkish military expansion in the region. The strikes, which included up to eight separate attacks, reportedly damaged the base's runway and storage areas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the operation served as a warning, asserting that Israel will not tolerate a Turkish military presence moving south, which the government views as a direct threat to its security. The airbase is located approximately 70 kilometers from the Turkish border.

Relations between Israel and Turkey have sharply deteriorated following the incident. The office of the Israeli Prime Minister labeled Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan an ‘antisemitic dictator’ and accused Ankara of attempting to destabilize the region. Conversely, Turkey has denied having any military personnel at the base and has sought an international arrest warrant for Netanyahu regarding accusations of genocide.

U.S. officials noted the gravity of the situation, warning that the strikes could have triggered a direct military confrontation between Israel and Turkey. While Syria has denied the presence of Turkish troops at the site, reports suggest Turkey has been involved in reconstruction and training efforts within the new Syrian government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa.
