United Kingdom imposes trade sanctions on Israeli West Bank settlements

The United Kingdom has announced new trade sanctions targeting goods and services originating from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The measures include banning imports from these settlements and implementing sanctions against individuals and entities that facilitate or profit from settlement activities. These restrictions are expected to take effect within six to nine months.

In response, Israel has initiated diplomatic counter-measures, including an order to close the British Consulate in East Jerusalem within 30 days. The escalation has triggered a significant diplomatic rift between London and Tel Aviv.

A coalition of eight Arab and Muslim nations, including Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, welcomed the UK's decision, calling it a step consistent with international law. Additionally, the UK, alongside France and Canada, reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution, condemning the expansion of Israeli settlements as a direct threat to regional peace.

Amidst these diplomatic tensions, Israeli authorities are reportedly considering plans to construct 1,670 new housing units within West Bank Jewish settlements, a move that further complicates international efforts to maintain the viability of a future Palestinian state.
