Israel orders West Bank and Gaza crossing closures for October 5 and 7

Israel Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered a total closure of the West Bank and the shutdown of all crossings into the Gaza Strip on October 5 and 7. The decision follows security assessments and military recommendations as the region approaches the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attacks.

In the West Bank, movement will be strictly restricted. Exceptions are limited to essential health workers, cases involving obligations to the Israeli Supreme Court, and specific needs related to the security buffer zones. All such exceptions require prior approval from the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT).

Regarding the Gaza Strip, the closure of crossings means that no humanitarian aid will be delivered to the enclave on the specified dates. While the delivery of aid will pause, the collection of aid that has already arrived at the Kerem Shalom crossing is expected to continue according to schedule.

The announcement comes amid heightened security tensions and a high Palestinian death toll in Gaza, which has reached 74,228 according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
