Israel to develop domestic precision bombs modeled after U.S. JDAM
The Israeli Ministry of Defense has commissioned the national defense industry to develop and produce heavy precision bombs modeled after the United States’ Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM). This initiative aims to increase Israel’s strategic autonomy and reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers for critical aerial munitions.
The shift in strategy follows the partial suspension of certain ammunition and bomb deliveries by the United States administration in May 2024. To ensure the Israeli Air Force can maintain long-term operations without being subject to external political restrictions or supply delays, the country is expanding its domestic production capabilities for smart air-to-ground weapons.
As part of this effort, Israel has entered into multi-year contracts with Elbit Systems, including a $200 million agreement to manufacture aerial munitions entirely within Israeli facilities. Defense Minister Israel Katz has emphasized that these moves are essential for the country’s strategic independence and its ability to replenish arsenals during prolonged conflicts.
