Israel to establish military Space Brigade
Israel is establishing a dedicated military space brigade to develop satellite-based intelligence and future space warfare capabilities. Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the initiative, describing it as a ‘blue-and-white Star Wars’ effort aimed at making Israel a global leader in space defense.
The new unit, which will operate under the IDF Planning Directorate, is expected to be established in the coming months as part of the military’s Hoshen modernization program. The brigade will be responsible for overseeing the development and operational use of space technologies, including orbital surveillance systems and space-based sensors.
Katz stated that the ability to monitor, defend, and strike targets from space will strengthen Israel’s regional and global position while deterring enemies. Additionally, the minister noted that expanding military capabilities beyond Earth’s atmosphere is intended to drive national economic growth through increased technological development and entrepreneurship.
The decision was finalized during a senior military appointments meeting chaired by IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. A Brigadier General has been selected to lead the new brigade.
