Israel-Turkey tensions rise following military strike in Syria

Israeli security officials have expressed concern that aggressive rhetoric from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz could trigger unnecessary escalation with Turkey. This warning comes as the Netanyahu government and the Likud party increase political attacks against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ankara ahead of the Knesset elections scheduled for October 27.

Relations have been strained following an Israeli military strike on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Idlib, Syria, located approximately 70 kilometers from the Turkish border. While Israel suggested the strike addressed security concerns regarding potential Turkish military presence in Syria, Turkey rejected these claims, calling the strike a violation of Syrian sovereignty and denying any military presence at the site.

In response to escalating tensions, the Turkish Presidency accused the Israeli government of using irresponsible security populism to distract from domestic issues. Additionally, the Turkish Ministry of Justice has reportedly contacted Interpol to request a Red Notice for Prime Minister Netanyahu.
