Israel warns travelers against importing Sukkot Four Species
Israel’s Agriculture Ministry has issued a warning to travelers regarding the importation of the ‘Four Species’ used during the Sukkot holiday. The ministry cited risks of introducing pests and plant diseases that could damage local crops and the agricultural export industry.
The Four Species consist of a date palm branch, myrtle branches, willow branches, and an etrog (citron). Under the Plant Protection Law, travelers are permitted to bring one etrog for personal use, but the other three species require official authorization. Failure to provide approval will result in confiscation.
Since the start of 2026, authorities at Ben Gurion Airport have intercepted over 1,200 passengers attempting to bring prohibited plant material into the country, leading to the destruction of approximately three tons of produce. To assist travelers, inspectors at the airport will offer a free set of Israeli-grown Four Species for personal use in exchange for any confiscated items.
