Israeli Ambassador Pnina Yanai visits Chalkida Jewish community

The new Israeli Ambassador to Greece, Pnina Yanai, visited the historic Jewish community of Chalkida to participate in Sukkot religious ceremonies. During her visit, she was welcomed by Community President Solomon Maisis and members of the Romaniote community, one of the oldest in Greece.

Yanai expressed deep emotion regarding the community's long historical continuity, noting that the area represents “thousands of years of Jewish history.” She specifically highlighted the community's historical roots, referencing the 12th-century traveler Benjamin of Tudela and the local hero of the Greco-Italian War, Colonel Mordechai Frizis, who originated from the community.

The Ambassador also participated in the traditional kiddush meal within the sukkah, praising the hospitality and the preservation of local traditions.
