Israeli athletes excluded from Derry triathlon

Four Israeli athletes will not compete in the Europe Triathlon Cup in Derry, Northern Ireland, following objections from the event organizer, the North West Triathlon Club (NWTC). The NWTC stated it could not support the participation of athletes representing Israel, citing concerns over public safety and potential disruptions. The club also expressed opposition to the State of Israel being represented in international sports while Palestinians continue to suffer, though it clarified the stance was not based on religion or ethnicity.

The decision follows the publication of a provisional entry list on the World Triathlon website. In response, the Israeli Triathlon Association (ITA) expressed deep concern regarding what it characterized as discriminatory treatment and antisemitism, stating it is considering legal action to ensure such a situation does not recur.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) noted it was aware of potential protest activities related to the event. While the NWTC emphasized safety and political values, some local officials, including Northern Ireland Assembly member Julie Middleton, criticized the exclusion, arguing it reflects poorly on the city’s reputation for hospitality.
