Israel’s Central Elections Committee has voted to disqualify several major Arab-majority political parties and individual candidates from the upcoming Knesset elections scheduled for October 27. The sweeping decisions include the disqualification of the United Arab List (Ra’am) and the Joint List (Hadash-Taal), as well as individual candidates Ofer Cassif and Sami Abu Shehadeh.

The committee, which includes representatives from various parliamentary parties, approved the disqualifications following petitions from members of the governing coalition, including the Likud party. The petitions alleged that these parties and candidates deny Israel’s existence as a Jewish and democratic state or support armed struggle by enemy states or terrorist organizations against Israel.

Specifically, the disqualification of Balad chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh was linked to an article he published following the October 7 attacks. Committee chairman Noam Sohlberg notably departed from the custom of maintaining neutrality to vote in favor of the disqualification. MK Ofer Cassif was also barred following allegations regarding his stance on government policies and the conflict in Gaza.

These decisions are not final and must be reviewed by the Israeli Supreme Court, which has historically overturned similar disqualifications. The political implications are significant, as the excluded parties, particularly Ra’am, have previously been viewed as potential kingmakers in government formation.
