NYC Mayor Mamdani faces backlash over October 7 remarks
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing intense criticism following a statement marking the third anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks. While Mamdani acknowledged the horrific nature of the attacks, which killed over 1,100 Israelis and resulted in 251 abductions, his remarks pivoted to condemn the Israeli government's military actions in Gaza. He characterized the situation in Gaza as an “ongoing genocide” and criticized the United States for its military support of Israel, stating that American tax dollars fund “war crimes.”
The mayor's comments have drawn sharp backlash from Jewish community leaders and Israeli officials. Critics have accused him of hijacking a day of mourning for Israeli victims to launch political attacks against the Jewish state. In response to the controversy, Ofir Akunis, Israel's Consul-General in New York, issued a formal invitation to Mamdani to view a 47-minute documentary produced by the Israel Defense Forces. The film, which utilizes footage captured by Hamas militants during the attacks, is intended to provide a direct account of the events to help the mayor “understand the reality of what happened.”
