Israeli ex‑IDF operative charged with Iran espionage case

Israeli authorities indicted a former member of a classified Israel Defense Forces (IDF) unit on July 16 for maintaining contact with an individual who identified himself as an Iranian intelligence operative and for attempting to pass information that could benefit Iran. The indictment, filed in the Tel Aviv District Court, was issued jointly by the Israel Police, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and the Ministry of Defense. Investigators said the suspect, who served in both mandatory and reserve capacities in the secret unit, was also asked to recruit another serving soldier to establish contact with the Iranian agents. The suspect declined minor tasks such as graffiti and arson, and a proposed payment was never made. The case was made public on July 30, with officials warning the public against contact with hostile foreign agents. The indictment follows a broader pattern of thwarted Iranian espionage attempts, with 120 incidents reported in 2025 and 25 people indicted that year.
