Israeli kibbutzim face political shifts following Hamas attacks
The traditional socialist and left-leaning political identity of Israeli kibbutzim has been significantly altered following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Historically, these communal agricultural settlements served as strongholds for left-wing politics and advocated for peace with Palestinians.
In communities such as Nahal Oz, Kfar Aza, and Beeri, the violence resulted in significant loss of life. While some residents maintain their political stances, many have expressed a loss of faith in the possibility of coexistence with their neighbors.
This shift occurs as Israel prepares for elections. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a right-wing veteran, has campaigned on preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state, while his opponent, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, has also positioned himself against such a state from a center-right perspective. The peace camp has seen a substantial decline in influence within the national political landscape.
