Israeli Minister Shlomo Karai Calls Emergency Knesset Session Over Supreme Court Broadcast Law Freeze
The Israeli Supreme Court (Bagatz) issued an injunction freezing the recently approved broadcast law, prompting Minister of Communications Dr. Shlomo Karai to request that Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana convene a full parliamentary session during the recess. Karai attached signatures from 25 members of the Knesset, meeting the threshold required for an emergency plenary meeting. He argues that the court’s order constitutes a severe breach of parliamentary authority, undermines the sovereignty of the people, and threatens the constitutional balance between the legislature and the judiciary. The proposed emergency session would debate a resolution affirming that laws passed by the Knesset retain full force and that judicial intervention should not suspend legislation already approved by the elected majority.
