Pioneers of Bashan Israeli settlers infiltrate southern Syria to set up outpost

Israeli troops preparing a nighttime strike in southern Syria paused when they recognised the targets as religious Jewish settlers rather than Syrian militants. The individuals were identified as members of the fringe settler group known as the Pioneers of Bashan.

The Pioneers of Bashan, formed early last year, aim to establish Jewish settlements in the southwestern Syrian provinces of Quneitra, Daraa and Sweida, including the summit of Mount Hermon. Their members number in the dozens and have attempted cross‑border incursions from Israel into Syria every few days. Israel has occupied the area for more than a year, and part of it was declared a buffer zone in December 2024 after the ouster of Bashar al‑Assad. The group claims a historical‑biblical right to the land and argues that settlements would help defend the Golan Heights, which Israel captured in 1967 and later annexed – a move not recognised internationally. While the far‑right Israeli government backs the broader settlement movement, most Israelis regard the Pioneers of Bashan as a fringe element, and the Israeli military is tasked with restraining their incursions.
