Israeli political leaders signal opposition to Palestinian statehood

Political tensions in Israel are mounting as opposition leaders and Palestinian political parties face internal divisions ahead of upcoming elections.

Potential successors to Benjamin Netanyahu, including former IDF Chief Gadi Eisenkot and Naftali Bennett, have signaled they would not support the establishment of a Palestinian state. Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar party, has stated, “I have never spoken about a Palestinian state,” while Bennett has expressed a firm refusal to allow Palestinian statehood even if it facilitates normalization with Saudi Arabia.

Simultaneously, efforts to reunite Israel’s main Palestinian political parties are at risk. Mohammed Ali Taha, head of the Reconciliation Committee, has urged Ta'al leader Ahmed Tibi to accept a proposed joint electoral list. The attempt to form an alliance between Ta'al, Hadash, and Balad has stalled due to disputes over candidate ordering, threatening a coalition that previously held significant seats in the Israeli parliament.
