Israeli real estate companies accused of misleading Canadians

A formal complaint has been filed with Canada’s Competition Bureau alleging that at least four Israeli real estate companies and one Canadian marketing firm misled consumers in Toronto and Montreal. The complaint, submitted by the Global Echo Litigation Center and Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights, claims that properties located in occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank were marketed as being within Israel.

The Competition Bureau is currently reviewing the filing to determine if a formal investigation is warranted. Legal experts, including law professor James Yap, have noted that Canadian citizens purchasing such properties could face significant legal risks under international law, including potential complicity in war crimes.

This development follows an August advisory from the Canadian government urging businesses to avoid engagement with Israeli settlements due to legal and financial risks. The international community generally considers West Bank settlements illegal under international law.
