Around one hundred infantry soldiers from the Tzabar Battalion of the Israel Defense Forces’ Givati Brigade left the Sde Teiman military base in the Negev desert without authorization, abandoning personal weapons and other equipment. The protest was sparked after battalion commanders removed and destroyed long‑standing unit symbols – including wooden and metal plaques – a move that some soldiers said violated their battalion’s traditions. Video footage showed troops exiting the base with civilian bags while chanting slogans; one commander was reported to have used a five‑kilogram hammer to smash a plaque. The IDF described the incident as a breach of its values, opened a formal investigation and warned that the walk‑out caused a temporary loss of operational readiness for the unit. Most soldiers later returned, but roughly thirty remained absent and face disciplinary action. Sde Teiman has also been the focus of international criticism for alleged mistreatment of Palestinian detainees held there.
