Israel's Ben-Gvir unveils execution facility with viewing booths

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has unveiled plans for a new execution facility featuring gallows designed for Palestinians convicted of terrorism offenses. Construction and excavation near a prison have reportedly begun following the Knesset’s passage of capital punishment legislation earlier this year.

The proposed complex includes designated viewing booths intended to allow victims' families and bereaved relatives to witness the executions. This design has drawn criticism for potentially transforming the administration of justice into a spectacle.

The legal framework governing these executions has faced scrutiny for its application. While the law mandates the death penalty for terrorism convictions in military courts, it contains provisions that effectively exempt Jewish Israelis from the death penalty, unless the crime is committed with the intent to deny the existence of the State of Israel. Amnesty International has raised alarms regarding the law, stating it reinforces discriminatory systems and eliminates fundamental guarantees for a fair trial.
