Israel's Conscription Debate Draws Olim and Birchas Mordechi Camp

The ongoing dispute over military exemptions for Haredi yeshiva students has intensified in Israel, with secular and religious Zionist groups arguing that the current arrangement is unsustainable. Manpower shortages have led some young Israelis to consider leaving the country, prompting calls for new approaches to bridge the divide. Community leaders suggest that new immigrants (olim) can contribute by bringing experience of pluralistic cooperation, helping to keep dialogue open without forcing either side to abandon its convictions.

At the same time, the annual Birchas Mordechi Camp, founded 65 years ago by the late Harav Baruch Mordechai Ezrachi, gathered hundreds of bochurim from yeshivas and secular institutions across Israel. The camp, historically supported by leading rabbis such as Harav Meir Chadash, Harav Elazar Menachem Man Shach and Harav Aharon Leib Steinman, featured discussions on the meaning of Torah life and the contentious issue of military conscription. Organizers reported unusually high demand, pairing participants with mentors and fostering thoughtful conversation about the relationship between Torah study, the State of Israel, and military service.
