Israel’s Nili unit eliminates 2,800 targets since October 7 attacks

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security service have officially acknowledged the existence of a joint special unit named ‘Nili’. Created following the October 7, 2023, attacks, the unit is tasked with identifying, locating, and eliminating individuals responsible for the terror attacks and the kidnapping of hostages.

Reports indicate that the unit has already eliminated approximately 2,800 individuals from a target list of roughly 5,000 people. The list includes high-ranking Hamas commanders, members of the Nukhba, individuals who breached the border fence, and those involved in the abuse or guarding of hostages.

To compile these targets, the unit utilizes a combination of traditional intelligence and modern technology, including facial recognition software, artificial intelligence, and footage from GoPro cameras and internet videos. Officials state that targeting decisions are made with legal oversight to ensure precision and to avoid civilian casualties. The unit’s operations have reportedly accelerated recently as Israel seeks to reach more targets amid international pressure regarding potential ceasefires.
