Israel's technology sector evolution and scaling challenges

The evolution of Israel’s technology sector is driven by diverse historical factors beyond the common focus on the military. Technology historian Meir Valman notes that the foundation was laid by universities such as the Technion and the Weizmann Institute long before 1948. While the IDF eventually became a major incubator, early growth in semiconductors and life sciences was heavily supported by academic institutions.

International influence, particularly from the United States, also played a critical role. Starting in the 1960s and 1970s, Israeli entrepreneurs adopted American business practices, including sales, marketing, and product design, after spending time in the U.S.

In the biomedical sector, Israel demonstrates a high capacity for turning scientific research into startups, yet faces challenges in scaling these into enduring global pharmaceutical giants. While Teva is a notable success story, the current ecosystem often prioritizes licensing or acquiring assets over building long-term companies that compound value through decades of operation.
