ISRO completes critical module separation tests for Gaganyaan mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed a series of Crew Module (CM) and Service Module (SM) separation tests for the Gaganyaan mission. These tests are a critical milestone for India’s human spaceflight program, specifically preparing for the upcoming uncrewed Gaganyaan G1 mission targeted for 2026.

The Gaganyaan orbital module functions as a single integrated unit from launch through the orbital phase. However, the Crew Module must separate from the Service Module before re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. This process requires precisely sequenced events involving pyrotechnic devices and jettisoning mechanisms to ensure astronaut safety.

Conducted at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, the trials simulated the full separation scenario, including the severing of umbilical connections that maintain electrical and fluid services between the modules. The tests validated the design adequacy, operational reliability, and the shock-survivability of critical subsystems, including avionics, inertial navigation, and thermal protection systems.
