ISRO successfully tests CE20 cryogenic engine at 220 kN thrust
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed a flight acceptance hot test of its CE20 cryogenic engine at an uprated thrust of 220 kN. The test, conducted on September 9 at the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu, is intended to enhance the payload capability of the LVM3 launch vehicle.
The engine is earmarked for the C32 upper stage of the upcoming LVM3-M7 mission, which is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. During the testing process, ISRO also successfully demonstrated the performance of the LOX Tank Pressurisation Module (LTPM), a component designed for the C32 stages used in the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme.
To facilitate sea-level testing for an engine designed for high-altitude operations, ISRO utilized a Nozzle Protection System (NPS). This system helps manage the challenges of the engine's high-area-ratio nozzle by preventing flow separation and associated thermal stresses. This successful test marks a significant step in advancing India's heavy-lift launch capabilities and human spaceflight ambitions.
