ISRO successfully tests improved SSLV solid booster stage

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed a ground static test of an improved solid booster stage (SS1) for its Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV). The test took place on August 11, 2026, at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

The upgraded design features an enhanced propellant burn rate in two motor segments, an optimized thermal protection system, and mass reduction. Additionally, improvements were made to the nozzle sub-system to facilitate easier production. These modifications are expected to increase the SSLV's payload capability to Low Earth Orbit by approximately 100 kg.

During the test, instrumentation monitored over 600 parameters, including ignition, ballistics, structural, thermal, dynamics, and acoustic performance. ISRO reported that the motor's performance closely matched predicted values. The SSLV is designed as a quick-turnaround, launch-on-demand vehicle, and technology transfer to Indian industry is currently underway to support large-scale manufacturing for small satellite launch services.
