Bangladesh shipbreaking yard gas leak kills at least eight workers

At least eight workers have died and five others are missing following a toxic gas leak at the Ferdous Steel Shipbreaking Yard and Recycling Factory in Sitakunda, Chittagong, Bangladesh.

The incident occurred on Friday during the dismantling of a decommissioned vessel that was previously used to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG). Witnesses reported hearing screams from within the facility as workers collapsed from gas exposure.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the emission and whether adequate safety measures were in place. While the yard is classified as an environmentally compliant facility, fire service officials have criticized the management, asserting that the vessel should have been completely cleared of gas before cutting operations began. An audit of the shipyard has been ordered as part of the official inquiry.
