ISSSTE Hospital in Jalisco performs four cornea transplants
Specialists at the Dr. Valentín Gómez Farías General Hospital in Jalisco, part of the ISSSTE network, successfully performed four cornea transplants. These procedures were made possible through the coordination of CENATRA, IMSS, and ISSSTE transplant officials, utilizing organs from two donors.
The first donor, originally from Chiapas, provided corneas that were transplanted into two elderly patients in Jalisco. The second donor, from Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, provided corneas for two other elderly patients. All recipients are reported to be in optimal health.
In light of these successes, health officials emphasize the importance of discussing organ donation within families. While the Voluntary Donor Card communicates intent, experts note that Mexican law recognizes both express and tacit consent. To ensure a person's wishes are respected and to prevent family disputes, it is recommended to share donation decisions with relatives and utilize official consent formats provided by CENATRA.
