ISSSTE hospital in Sonora lacks obstetric and neonatal facilities

A woman was forced to give birth in the emergency room of the Dr. Fernando Ocaranza hospital in Hermosillo, Sonora, due to a lack of specialized obstetric facilities. According to Deputy Gabriela Félix, the ISSSTE facility lacks a functioning labor and delivery unit (Tococirugía), operating rooms, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (UCIN).

The incident highlighted several critical shortages, including a lack of surgical kits, sterile fields, and specific materials required for childbirth. Additionally, the emergency area was occupied by patients with conditions such as pneumonia and pressure ulcers, increasing the risk of infection for both the mother and the newborn. The hospital was unable to facilitate a transfer to other institutions like IMSS because the patient was already in active labor upon arrival.
