Sonora to expand healthcare with 419 free clinics

The government of Sonora is working to enable 419 clinics under the Universal Health System (SUS) to expand access to free medical services. The initiative aims to bring primary care closer to families living in rural communities, marginalized areas, and remote locations.

Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño stated that the project is part of a strategy driven by the Mexican federal government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, IMSS-Bienestar, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), and the Ministry of Welfare. The plan involves rehabilitating and equipping existing health houses and medical facilities to provide first-contact services.

Jorge Laureano Eugenio, Undersecretary of Health Services, noted that the clinics will address common illnesses, perform timely screenings, and provide follow-up for priority conditions. The project also intends to incorporate telemedicine services and facilitate referrals for patients requiring specialized care. Implementation is expected to begin during the first months of 2027.
