ISSSTE utilizes ‘Código Oro’ protocol for obstetric emergencies

The Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE) utilizes the ‘Código Oro’ (Gold Code) protocol to manage critical obstetric emergencies. This medical response system is designed to provide immediate care to prevent maternal and perinatal mortality by mobilizing multidisciplinary teams to stabilize patients facing life-threatening complications.

At the Centro Médico Nacional (CMN) ‘20 de Noviembre’, the protocol has been activated six times so far in 2026. These cases involved pregnant women between 30 and 41 years of age, ranging from 20 to 37 weeks of gestation. The protocol triggers both a sound alert and an internal chat to deploy the Obstetric Immediate Response Team (ERIO).

The ERIO consists of various specialists, including intensive care, maternal-fetal medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, neonatology, and several surgical and diagnostic disciplines. The protocol is applied in situations such as severe obstetric hemorrhage, preeclampsia, eclampsia, sepsis, and other complications that rapidly threaten the lives of both the mother and the fetus.
