Istanbul Airport opens fourth main runway

Istanbul Airport has officially inaugurated its fourth main runway, a project completed with an investment of approximately 890 million euros. Unlike the existing three runways, this new runway is constructed in an east-west orientation, measuring 2,820 meters in length and 45 meters in width.

The new infrastructure is designed to enhance operational flexibility, particularly during adverse weather conditions. It aims to reduce taxiing and waiting times for domestic and eastern-bound flights, while also providing significant fuel and time savings. The expansion is part of the Phase 2 investment plan by İGA Istanbul Airport.

During the opening ceremony, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan highlighted the strategic importance of Turkey's geographic location and addressed past criticisms regarding the airport's wind conditions and terrain. He noted that the airport continues to set records in flight volume and passenger numbers. In addition to the runway, other recent investments at the airport include the 485-room Hilton Istanbul Airport and the JETEX-İGA Terminal.
