Istanbul Airport named world's most connected aviation hub

Istanbul Airport has been named the world’s most connected aviation hub for 2026, according to the OAG Megahubs Index. The ranking, which measures connectivity based on potential flight connections within a six-hour window and the number of destinations served, sees Istanbul overtake London Heathrow for the top position.

Istanbul serves 337 destinations, with Turkish Airlines accounting for approximately 80% of the airport's capacity. London Heathrow follows in second place, experiencing a 6% decrease in potential connections compared to the previous year, partly due to flight schedule disruptions in the Middle East that reduced its regional capacity by 25%.

Amsterdam Schiphol ranks third, followed by Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Chicago O'Hare. The top 10 list also includes Seoul Incheon, Frankfurt, Tokyo Haneda, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson. The report highlights that while Atlanta remains a leader in total passenger capacity, it does not lead in international connectivity. Additionally, the Asia-Pacific region shows strong dominance, accounting for eight of the top 20 global hubs.
