Istanbul Airport's fourth runway achieves fuel and emission savings
Istanbul Airport's fourth main runway has demonstrated significant operational efficiencies during its first month of service. Following its inauguration on September 18, the new runway facilitated 1,738 takeoffs by October 15, accounting for approximately 7.9% of the airport's total 22,118 departures during that period.
According to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, the new runway provides an alternative takeoff option, particularly for eastward routes. This has resulted in a total route shortening of 22,453 nautical miles, averaging 15.2 nautical miles per flight. These optimizations led to an estimated saving of 284 tons of fuel and a reduction of 897 tons of carbon dioxide emissions within the first month of operation.
