Istanbul Airport's Sixth Runway Ready for Four-Plane Simultaneous Takeoffs

The new 09/27 runway at Istanbul Airport, measuring 2,820 m in length and 45 m in width, has been completed and will be opened soon. Positioned to avoid intersecting the main north‑south traffic corridor, the runway is the airport’s first east‑west strip and is intended primarily for domestic departures. Its design allows up to four aircraft to depart at the same time, cutting taxi times, reducing queuing delays and improving fuel efficiency.

With the addition of this sixth runway, Istanbul Airport becomes the world’s seventh airport with the most runways, joining a group that includes Chicago O'Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth. Airport operator IGA confirmed the strip will serve regular commercial traffic, not just private jets.
