Istanbul binding house restores over 1,000 rare manuscripts

The Isar binding house, part of the Istanbul Research and Education Center, has successfully restored over 1,000 rare books and manuscripts since its establishment in 2017. Led by binder Muharrem Kalnji, the team specializes in preserving historical works that have suffered from wear, torn pages, and damaged covers.

Notable restored items include the 500-year-old ‘Fusus al-Hikam’ by Ibn Arabi, the ‘Diwan’ by poet Sheikh Ghalib, and Ibn Khaldun’s ‘Muqaddimah’. The center also works on 200-year-old texts like ‘Ma'rifat Nama’ and various lithographed Qurans.

A recent exhibition in Istanbul titled ‘Wafa lil-Kitab: The Art of Binding and Book Restoration’ showcased 40 of these rare works. Beyond physical restoration, the center focuses on cultural continuity by hosting training programs for students to ensure the traditional craft of bookbinding is passed down to future generations.
