Istanbul construction accident kills 19-year-old worker
A fatal workplace accident occurred at a construction site in the Eyüpsultan district of Istanbul, resulting in the death of 19-year-old Mazlum Gürbüz. Gürbüz and his 18-year-old childhood friend, Levent Çelik, were working at the site after moving from Van for employment.
The incident took place on September 29 when the two workers were called back to the field to install a sign after a period of rain. While using a basket platform, a metal rod held by one of the workers made contact with a high-voltage power line, causing an electric shock.
Gürbüz was hospitalized and spent a week in intensive care before passing away on October 5. Çelik survived the incident and has since been discharged from medical care.
Family members and legal representatives have raised allegations of negligence. The victim's mother claims he was forced to work despite the rainy weather, while the family lawyer stated that the workers were provided with metal rods but lacked necessary protective equipment, such as gloves.
