Istanbul court begins trial of Netanyahu and 34 Israeli officials

A criminal court in Istanbul has commenced the trial in absentia of 35 Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, regarding the military interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. The legal proceedings, held at the 11th High Criminal Court, stem from an October 2025 incident where the Israeli Navy intercepted civilian vessels attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip in international waters.

The indictment includes charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, torture, illegal deprivation of liberty, and property damage. Prosecutors are seeking aggravated life sentences, with cumulative prison terms potentially reaching thousands of years for the defendants. The case involves approximately 101 victims from over 40 countries.

During the initial hearing, victims and activists provided testimonies detailing physical and psychological abuse, including forced searches, denial of medical care, and verbal insults. The court has ordered an investigation into whether the defendants hold assets or real estate within Turkey and has maintained existing arrest warrants and requests for INTERPOL Red Notices.
