Istanbul court overturns statute of limitations for 21 Ergenekon-era judicial figures

The Istanbul Anadolu 26th High Criminal Court has overturned a previous decision to close the investigation into 21 dismissed judges and prosecutors involved in the Ergenekon cases. The original ruling by the Bakırköy 11th High Criminal Court had cited the expiration of the statute of limitations as the reason for closing the case on March 30, 2026.

Following an appeal by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the higher court ruled that the suspects' actions—which include allegations of creating fake evidence, illegal searches, unlawful detentions, and wiretapping—should be evaluated under the crime of torture. Because torture is not subject to a statute of limitations, the previous decision was vacated.

The investigation involves several high-profile figures, including former Istanbul prosecutor Zekeriya Öz. The court has ordered the case file to be returned to the Bakırköy 11th High Criminal Court for further legal proceedings.
