Istanbul gym instructor assaulted during rent dispute

A dispute over a rent increase in a Göktürk sports gym in Istanbul resulted in a physical assault on a fitness instructor. The incident occurred on September 1 when Gökhan Ş., a 50-year-old kickboxing instructor and the primary tenant, allegedly attacked his subtenant, 33-year-old Selma Y.

According to the victim, the conflict began when Gökhan Ş. attempted to raise her rent from 25,000 to 40,000 lira within six months. Selma Y. stated that when she refused the increase and suggested paying the original rate until she found a new location, the suspect threatened her life and physically assaulted her, including kicking her in the chest while she attempted to record the encounter on her phone.

Following the incident, Gökhan Ş. was taken into custody. In his statement to the police, he admitted to the assault, citing his own increased rent costs as the reason for the hike, and expressed regret. He was subsequently released by the prosecutor's office after facing legal proceedings for intentional injury, threats, and insults.
