Istanbul Halk Ekmek criticized over falling sales and rising costs

During an Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Council meeting, AK Party member Zekeriya Eroğlu criticized the management of Istanbul Halk Ekmek A.Ş. regarding production and pricing efficiency.

Eroğlu reported that while the institution's production capacity increased by 20 percent since 2019, annual bread sales fell by approximately 31 million units, dropping from 250 million in 2019 to 219 million in 2025. He also noted that the workforce grew by about 50 percent, from 442 employees to 671, during the same period.

Regarding costs, Eroğlu highlighted a significant price increase, stating that the price of standard Halk Ekmek rose from 0.75 TL in 2019 to 12.50 TL in 2026. This change reduced the price advantage Halk Ekmek held over commercial bakery bread from 50 percent in 2019 to approximately 28 percent in 2026.
