Istanbul history featured in new Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition
The Victoria and Albert Museum is hosting an exhibition titled ‘Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires’, opening on November 7. The exhibition explores the 1,600-year history of the city, beginning with Constantine the Great refounding Byzantium as Constantinople in AD 330, through the end of the Ottoman Empire in 1922.
Featuring more than 200 objects, including mosaics, manuscripts, jewels, silks, and ceramics, the display traces the city's evolution across Byzantine and Ottoman eras. Notable items include the 10th-century Veroli Casket, which showcases Greek myth and Roman craft, and historical references to the Hagia Sophia.
