Istanbul hosts first R4 and E3 ministerial meeting

Istanbul is hosting a high-level ministerial meeting between the European E3 group (United Kingdom, France, and Germany) and the R4 group (Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Egypt). This marks the first time these seven nations are meeting under this specific diplomatic framework, an initiative launched by Ankara to enhance regional cooperation and coordination.

The discussions, chaired by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, cover several critical international issues, including the Palestinian cause, developments in Yemen, and the security of the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign ministers in attendance include Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, Ed Miliband of the United Kingdom, Jean-Noël Barrot of France, Johann David Wadewulf of Germany, Badr Abdelatty of Egypt, and Ishaq Dar of Pakistan.

Regarding Middle East security, Turkey is expected to advocate for increased international pressure on Israel concerning settlement expansion and to emphasize the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Additionally, the meeting will address the Russia-Ukraine war, with Turkey aiming to provide proposals to prevent the conflict from spreading into the Black Sea region. The ministers are also expected to discuss diplomatic solutions to tensions between the United States and Iran to avoid broader regional confrontation.
